How to Have the Best Fall Weekend in San Diego (3-Day Itinerary)
It may be fall in San Diego, but locals know the season by another name: “second summer.”
That in-between period, from October to early November, “second summer” feels like a San Diego secret. The sun is warm, the beaches are calm, and temperatures hover at 75 degrees, perfect for adventure and al fresco dinner dates. And, with fewer vacation crowds, San Diego feels authentically local. Neighborhood restaurants are filled with real neighbors. Rooftop bars are buzzing. In other words, it’s the best time to visit San Diego.
Thinking of a San Diego autumn getaway? Our latest guide breaks down where to eat, stay, and play all “second summer” long. Read on for the season’s best Little Italy San Diego events, our favorite outdoor dining spots, and a three-day fall itinerary that maps out the best things to do near Carté Hotel San Diego.
Where to Eat in San Diego: Fall Dining
“Second summer” is our favorite time to hop around San Diego’s best rooftops. There’s no “May Gray” or “June Gloom” fog to obstruct your views, and reservations are easier to snag without the summer crowds.
For happy hour drinks and weekend brunch, Lily Rooftop is the local go-to. Our newly reimagined rooftop lounge feels like a hidden gem, floating 16 floors above the city with panoramic views, seasonal menus, and craft cocktails. Plus, on Sundays, the open-air terrace turns into a football watch party with game day menu specials and a large-screen projector showing NFL Sunday games with surround sound.
Looking to explore Little Italy’s dining scene? Add these Carté-approved spots to your list:
- Craft & Commerce – A funky gastropub with eclectic decor, inventive cocktails, patio seating, and a taxidermied lion you have to see to believe.
- Born & Raised – A glamorous Art Deco steakhouse with tableside specials and an open-air rooftop bar. Good for special occasions and romantic date nights.
- Ironside Fish & Oyster – Fresh local seafood and San Diego purveyors take the spotlight at this iconic restaurant. Expect interactive moments, fun presentations, and lots of oysters.
- Bird Rock Coffee Roasters – With 11 locations in San Diego County, this award-winning coffee shop roasts ethically sourced, single-origin coffee with expert precision.
- Queenstown Public House – Open morning ‘til night, this New Zealand-style restaurant feels like a cozy cottage, complete with an outdoor fire pit.
- Morning Glory – It’s all about breakfast and brunch at this artsy pink-hued restaurant. Reserve in advance and go for classics like the Japanese-style soufflé pancakes and pork belly ginger fried rice.
Things to Do in Fall: Best San Diego Attractions & Fall Events
Fall is festival season in San Diego. During “second summer,” festivals take over the streets nearly every weekend with handmade crafts, wine tastings, and tons of live music. Here’s what’s on our radar this season:
- San Diego Food + Wine Festival (November 1-8) – Eight days of delicious food, wine, and spirits led by Michelin and James Beard honorees.
- San Diego Beer Week (November 6-15) – This annual event celebrates San Diego’s thriving craft beer scene with 10 days of events, networkers, and limited-time collaborations.
- Coronado Island Film Festival (Nov. 4-8) – Film screenings, director Q&As, and cinematic experiences take place in Coronado’s seaside village.
- Encinitas Holiday Street Fair (Nov. 22) – Held every year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, this local street fair marks the start of holiday season with over 450 vendors, live entertainment, children’s rides, a beer garden, and more.
Looking for something quieter instead? Fall is the best time to visit San Diego’s famous attractions like Balboa Park and the Embarcadero waterfront. With fewer tourists in town, these iconic spots feel more spacious and relaxing. Go for a walk along the harbor and check out the USS Midway, visit Balboa’s myriad art museums, or stroll through Victorian architecture in the Gaslamp Quarter.
